After moving to Huntsville out of college, I spent my first three years living in an apartment. This is pretty common for a generation with significant student loan debt and anyone that lives in a large city with high cost of living. Some apartment complexes have gotten better about hosting events that bring their tenants together, but there’s something about having your own backyard that really paints a picture of home. It can be your very own peaceful place with fresh air or a place for social gatherings with family and friends.
Backyard brunches have become my niche. An 800 square foot home makes it challenging to pack in 10-15 people and 3+ dogs, but the backyard makes things tolerable. You may say the customized Om-LITs and mimosas play a larger role--and you know what--you’re probably right. Regardless, my backyard has become a source for shenanigans and memories with some incredible people. That’s just the kind of people you’re going to find in Huntsville, Alabama.
Beyond your own backyard, there are a couple areas in Huntsville that emit a similar vibe. The two that come to mind are The Stovehouse and The Camp at MidCity. At both venues, you’ll find food, drinks, outdoor games, events, live music, and of course, great people. These places will typically be packed, but there’s something about the atmosphere that gives the similar peace of mind that you get in your very own backyard.
